Em 1979, o biólogo e professor emérito da Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de Massachusetts Jon Kabat-Zinn desenvolveu um programa chamado Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction – MBSR (Programa de Mindfulness de Redução do Estresse), para pacientes do hospital da mesma Universidade. Inicialmente destinado a pacientes que sofriam de dor crônica e apresentavam quadros de estresse, o protocolo foi usado para diversos públicos e pesquisas científicas.

O professor já era praticante de meditação zen budista, a qual adaptou no intuito de proporcionar o estado de mente presente, centrada no “aqui e agora”, ao maior número possível de pessoas – de maneira que a técnica independesse de qualquer crença religiosa. Daí a referência de o mindfulness ser uma forma de meditação laica.

Ciência aplicada

Desde sua origem, portanto, o mindfulness é profundamente ligado ao pensamento acadêmico. Todas as contribuições e indicações são embasadas por estudos desenvolvidos em centros de pesquisa, formação e ensino da prática, em diferentes lugares do mundo. São muitas as instituições dedicadas a quem deseja se tornar um instrutor da atenção plena. A formação se dá de forma contínua, composta de retiros, cursos e especializações.

Universidade de Oxford

O Brasil aparece nesse mapa com o Núcleo de Mindfulness e Promoção da Saúde, da Universidade Federal de São Paulo (Unifesp), que oferece o Programa Mente Aberta, e com o Retiro Avançado em Mindfulness (também da Unifesp), que promove o encontro de profissionais do setor, o aprofundamento da prática pessoal, a troca de experiências e o atendimento a dúvidas e dificuldades na condução dos grupos.

La fora, além da escola britânica Breathworks, criadora do programa Mindfulness-Based Pain Management (MBPM), há também o Oxford Mindfulness Centre, da universidade de mesmo nome, criador do modelo Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT).

Os Estados Unidos aparecem como grande polo formador de instrutores do mundo todo, com a Universidade de Stanford e seus programas do Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education; e o Mindful Awareness Practices (MAPs), oferecido pelo Mindful Awareness Research Center, da Universidade da Califórnia (UCLA).

O que são os programas de formação?

Os estudos científicos foram, em grande parte, responsáveis pela popularização da prática no Ocidente, desenvolvendo e ampliando seus conceitos por meio de protocolos que permitem a sistematização dos estudos e a comprovação dos resultados, a exemplo do que ocorre com qualquer outro tipo de ciência. Uma forma de seguir o método em todos os grupos. E, dessa maneira, abrir espaço para o estudo acadêmico do mindfulness.

Os programas de introdução à técnica são voltados aos interessados em incluir a meditação em seu dia a dia. Para se tornar um instrutor da prática, no entanto, é preciso ingressar em outras esferas de estudo, seguir com formações e especializações e se qualificar com um certificado de professor de mindfulness, como o do International Mindfulness Teachers Association (IMTA).
